Activities

Hill Walking

Whether a scout wants to learn just to enjoy the hills, do a DofE expedition, or aspire to obtain a scout or even national qualification - West Herts District has an activity available.

We have a number of qualified leaders who support Troop and District camps - giving all scouts the opportunity to join in - and who organise additional weekends for training and assessments.

As part of the Hertfordshire Scout District, we have access to truly great hill walking and mountaineering bases, including Coetmor Mill in Wales and Lochearnhead in Scotland.

Not only do we have access to great facilities, we also have a first class County Mountaineering team that organises a number of mountaineering courses during the year. After gaining basic experience from District hill activities scouts can take a step further and develop new, advanced skills such as Introduction to Mountaineering (IMC) - which is great fun!!

Contact Oliver (Oz) Foster (District Hill Walking Advisor) for more details.

Water Activities

An important and fun part of Our Adventure is the opportunity to learn dinghy sailing.

Most of our sailing is at weekends between May and October at Great Moor Sailing Club. We own eleven dinghies (see on the right) and have access to two more scout boats.

Most of our troops/units have at least one RYA qualified instructor - so standards of teaching and safety are high.

Many of our scouts go on to County Sailing Week held every Spring Bank Holiday. We also organise an annual Regatta for Scouts and Explorers and a wet and wild Raft Race competition every summer.

Contact Brian Rook (District Water Activities Advisor) for more details.

Climbing

We aim to give as many of our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers the opportunity to climb. Whether on a simple indoor wall, abseiling down a dedicated facility at a scout camp/centre or outdoors in Wales and Scotland.

All climbing activities are run by qualified people and all equipmemt is safety checked each time it's used.It can be great fun and gives our Scouts a tremendous sense of achievement. Scared of heights??....No problem, only do what you want to do!
